Description

🐖 What is a Pigger Launcher?

A Pigger Launcher is a pressure vessel that inserts a pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) into a pipeline. PIGs are tools used to clean, inspect, or maintain pipelines without stopping the flow of product.

🛠️ Purpose of Pigger Launchers and Receivers

Cleaning: Remove debris, wax, liquids, or scale from inside pipelines.
Inspection: Use smart PIGs to detect cracks, corrosion, or geometry anomalies.
Separation: Separate different products in multiproduct pipelines.

🧱 Components of a Pigger Launcher/Receiver System

Component Description
Barrel Main body where the PIG is loaded/unloaded.
Closure Quick-opening door for inserting/removing the PIG.
Reducer Connects barrel to pipeline.
Kicker Line Diverts flow to push the PIG into the pipeline.
Main Line Valve Controls product flow.
Kicker Valve Controls kicker line flow.
Vent and Drain Used to depressurize and remove any remaining fluids.
Pressure Gauge Monitors internal pressure.
Safety Valve Pressure relief during overpressure situations.

🔄 How Pigger Launcher Works (Simplified)

Isolate and depressurize the pig launcher.
Open closure and load the PIG.
Close and seal the pig launcher.
Pressurize the launcher using the product flow.
Open kicker valve to push the PIG into the pipeline.
Close valves and resume normal flow.

📥 Pig Receiver (Opposite End)

The Pig Receiver is installed downstream and safely receives the PIG after it travels through the pipeline. It has similar components and follows a reverse procedure.

🧯 Safety Considerations

Always depressurize before opening closures.
Ensure interlocks are in place to prevent accidental openings.
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and wear PPE.
Use double-block and bleed where required.
